Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing

The Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing programme is where the Better Learners Better Workers scheme all began, with the help of the Cutlers’ Company.

Those involved in the delivery of the programme are The Work-wise Foundation, working with sector employers across the region.

Ambassadors learn and develop new skills through a range of activities including:

During Year 9

  • Induction to Engineering and Manufacturing (e.g. at Kelham Island, Millenium Galleries)
  • Enterprise Challenge launch
  • Visit to Magna for a ‘Back to the Future’ team building event
  • Enterprise Challenge workshops supported by entrepreneurs and business leaders
  • Enterprise Showcase and Marketplace at Magna
  • STEM Discovery Day at Sheffield Hallam University
  • Innovation Challenge – a real business challenge set by local companies
  • ‘Skills Matter Day’ at the Lifewise Centre
  • ‘Get up to Speed’ event at Magna – Judging of innovation competition
  • Industry and Learning provider visit

During Year 10

  • Induction and Year 9 review workshop
  • Business Challenge launch
  • Visits to engineering/advanced manufacturing businesses to learn about the roles, opportunities and challenges facing the sector, with linked projects
  • One-to-one interviews at The Cutlers’ Hall
  • Dragons Den style Business Challenge at Magna
  • Work experience opportunity
  • ‘Get up to Speed’ event at Magna
  • Box Car Challenge team building activity

During Y11 after the programme

  • ‘What Employers Want’ Conference at Jurys Inn
  • University Pathways session at Sheffield Hallam University
  • Apprenticeships Pathways Session at the AMRC Training Centre
